400 George Street, Sydney – John Whiting Architecture

As lead design and documentation architect for Crone Associates, John was responsible for the delivery of a high quality retail and commercial project in central Sydney. The development is particularly known in the city for the Sydney Arcade, a gently curving covered pedestrian street designed to link retail frontages through the site. The 30 storey office tower stepped form was designed to minimise over shadowing of adjacent streets. A two year design development programme resolved every detail from exterior cladding to interior fit-out and bespoke light fittings.

The detail of the exterior architecture established a theme and palette of materials which has been refined and adapted for the interior public spaces. A clear hierarchy has been designed to give each area a distinct character within a spatial sequence incorporating formal entrance, reception, main lobby, waiting, gallery and lift lobby. The changing mood of each room is enhanced by the use of different materials, lighting effects and furnishing.
