Marine Square, Brighton

Refurbishment of a grade II listed building which had been designated as unsafe by consulting structural engineers. The building is a mid nineteenth century residential building which forms the north west corner of a three sided square of similar properties facing south on Brighton sea front, It was probably built as a single dwelling or possibly a guest house. The building was converted to flats at some point in the past which had the impact of changing the original room layouts and removing many historic features.

The aim of the project was to repair and refurbish the existing building fabric to ensure the long term future of the building and the safety of future residents and of neighbouring properties, Also, to re-instate historic room layouts and features where possible in addition to providing a viable mix of dwelling types appropriate to the existing building.

The existing rear facade was constructed with quoined brick piers and window openings with flint and rubble infill (known locally as bungaroosh). The wall was leaning outwards and separating from the roof wall plate requiring temporary propping and full re-construction. The interior spaces were re-planned and a number of historic features re-discovered and repaired.

Completed in 2021.
